Clarion Hotel® Bergen

A lovely hotel, centrally located and only a few minutes walk to Bryggen. It was quiet despite it’s location although I stayed early in the week. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. My room was spacious and very comfortable. The room was cleaned on request. The pillows deserve a special mention as they were so comfy and not lumpy as is often the case in hotels. The breakfast was the best I had in Norway with a great selection, they catered for a gluten free diet and the coffee was good. The hotel bar was nice although €11 for a glass of wine was steep! I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again if I ever have the opportunity to visit beautiful Bergen again.

Excellent location one block from the historic old Bryggen and UNESCO site, 2 minutes walk to the Floyen Funicular rail and easy walking distance to most places in the city. However rooms are dark with old furnishings and dusty curtains. I booked more than 6 months in advance on a presummer sale before the hotel was sold by Nordic Choice to Strawberry Hotels but was given a small dark room with a view of the roof. The included buffet breakfast was very good with ample choices but often not enough tables to be seated. Note the hotel does not offer any other meal services, not even small snacks in the bar so you need to go out to eat.

This is the hotel to book if you want a lovely boutique hotel experience in the heart of Bergen. Perfectly situated one block from the warf and walkable to all that Bergen has to offer. Staff, rooms, common areas, food and amenities all lovely.

Arrived at hotel at 8:00 pm. No room despite reservation made weeks ago and confirmed 2 days ago. Sent across town to worse hotel. Altogether stood at front desk for 45 minutes to straighten out mess.

We stayed here on a Gate 1 tour this month. I would have given this hotel 3 stars had it not been for the room and how dated it is. The room was so old. It was small, the decor felt faded and the bathroom really was a bit of a 60's time warp with the cracked and faded black and white tiles on the floor. I like that it had a proper tub, but getting the shower head to work was a pain. It was extremely hot at night and opening the window (with a terrible view of a wall) didn't help. There was no fan either, so it was difficult to sleep. The bed was a little hard on the back as well. The rest of the hotel was really dated as well. The carpeting was tired, the elevator was small and ran infrequently (which is why we mostly took the stairs) and the front doors coming in and out were constantly malfunctioning. The staff really wasn't very helpful and couldn't answer most of the questions I had for them during my stay. The maids didn't really clean the room at all. They spruced up the bedding and emptied out the trash bins and that's it. No new towels, toiletries or drinking glasses in the bathroom. The table top wasn't cleaned either. The breakfast here was pretty good, with a good variety of food and drinks, so I will give it that. I didn't like that you had to reserve a time slot in order to go down to eat. I would have been able to sleep in more on my last day had it not been for that. The location was perfect as well. Really easy to get to the wharf from here and explore the city by foot. Maybe a renovation would help spruce the place up, but for now, I wish Gate 1 would choose one of the more modern looking Scandic's instead.
